Architectural versus three-tab
Three-tab shingles are cut flat, one thickness, with uniform tabs that give a roof a plain, single-plane look from the street. Architectural shingles, sometimes called dimensional shingles, are built from laminated layers that create shadow lines and a heavier, more textured appearance. That visual difference isn't cosmetic alone — the extra layer of material also makes an architectural shingle heavier and generally more wind-resistant than a three-tab of the same brand and line.
The gap has narrowed on price. Three-tab shingles used to carry a meaningfully lower cost than architectural, and on some jobs they still do, but the spread has shrunk enough that a lot of homeowners choosing between the two are really choosing on appearance rather than budget. Where the decision still matters is on a steep or highly visible roof, where the shadow-line texture of an architectural shingle reads clearly from the street and a flat three-tab can look thin by comparison.
Manufacturer warranty terms track that same split. Major shingle manufacturers such as GAF back architectural shingles with limited warranties built around a material life expectancy commonly cited in the 25 to 30 year range under normal conditions, and three-tab lines are typically rated for less. Both of those numbers describe the material's expected performance under ideal conditions, not a guarantee for any specific roof — which is exactly the distinction the next section gets into, because the shingle grade printed on the wrapper is only one input into how long a roof actually lasts.
What actually governs service life
A homeowner who upgrades from three-tab to architectural expecting a proportionally longer-lasting roof is often disappointed, because grade is not the biggest lever available. Two roofs with identical shingles, installed on the same street in the same year, can age at noticeably different rates depending on how they were installed and how the attic underneath them breathes.
Ventilation is the half of that equation most homeowners never see, because it happens inside the attic rather than on the roof surface. ARMA guidance calls for attic intake and exhaust to be balanced, with intake providing roughly 50 to 60 percent of the net free venting area and exhaust 40 to 50 percent — intake should always equal or exceed exhaust, because an attic with more exhaust than intake can end up pulling make-up air back through its own exhaust vents instead of drawing fresh air in at the eaves the way it's supposed to. An unbalanced attic runs hotter in summer and traps more moisture in winter, and shingles installed over a poorly vented attic bake and curl faster than the same shingle over a properly balanced one. Installation quality is the other half, and it's harder to see from the ground. A shingle that's nailed correctly, sealed to the course below it, and tied properly into flashing at every valley and penetration performs the way its warranty describes. The same shingle installed with a sloppy nailing pattern, exposed fasteners, or flashing that was reused instead of replaced can fail years ahead of schedule regardless of what grade it was cut from. Grade sets a ceiling on how long a roof could last; ventilation and installation decide how close to that ceiling the actual roof gets.
Installation details that matter
A handful of details separate a shingle roof that ages evenly from one that fails early at specific points, and most of them are invisible once the job is finished. Starter strip along the eaves and rakes has to be set correctly, because it's what keeps the first course of field shingles from lifting in wind — skip it or install it backward and the whole bottom edge of the roof is vulnerable from day one.

What is a major disadvantage of a slate roof?
Weight is the disadvantage that drives most of the others. Slate is far heavier than an asphalt shingle roof of the same size, which means the roof structure has to be engineered or reinforced to carry it — not every roof can take slate without that work first. That weight, combined with a smaller pool of installers who actually work in slate regularly, pushes both the upfront cost and the cost of any future repair well above what a shingle roof runs, and slate is also more fragile underfoot than asphalt, which limits how casually anyone can walk the roof for an inspection or a repair.
What is the cheapest time of year to get a new roof?
Roofing demand nationally tracks the weather — spring through fall is when most homeowners schedule work, and pricing and contractor availability both tighten up during that stretch. Installation during colder months is possible in many climates within the temperature range shingles need to seal properly, and material and labor pricing during the slower season can be softer simply because fewer jobs are competing for the same crews. The trade-off is a narrower weather window to work in, which can affect how a job gets sequenced even if the sticker price is lower.
What happens if you over insulate?
Insulation alone doesn't cause a problem, but insulation added without also addressing air sealing and ventilation can. Piling insulation into an attic without sealing the air leaks underneath it just moves warm, moist household air to a new spot to condense, and it can also bury or block the soffit vents an attic depends on for that intake side of ventilation. Past a certain thickness, additional insulation also delivers less and less additional benefit for the money, which is why we treat insulation, air sealing and ventilation as three parts of the same system rather than pricing one in isolation.
How much should a chimney rebuild cost?
That's masonry work, which sits outside the roofing scope we price, so we'd rather send you to a mason than guess at a trade we don't practice ourselves. The piece that does fall to us is the flashing where the rebuilt chimney meets the roof deck — that detail needs to be redone as part of any chimney rebuild, and having a roofer check it separately from the masonry work is the best way to make sure the two trades' work actually seals together instead of one undoing the other.
