Roof age versus array life
A solar array is a long-term investment, and it's typically expected to outlast a single roofing cycle. That mismatch creates a real planning problem: an array mounted on a roof that's already partway through its service life may well need to come off, get stored, and go back on again once that roof reaches the end of its life and needs replacing — a second install cost that a homeowner who put solar on first often didn't plan for.
That's the case for sequencing the roof and the array deliberately rather than defaulting to whichever gets decided first. A roof with substantial remaining service life is a reasonable base to mount an array on now. A roof that's already showing its age — worn shingles, a covering nearing the end of a typical service range, known issues that haven't been addressed — is a different conversation, and putting solar on it first usually means paying to remove and reinstall the array within a few years rather than getting a full mounting cycle out of the investment.
Doing the roof first, where it's genuinely due, avoids that double cost entirely. Removing and resetting an existing array to redo the roof underneath it is its own project, separate from the roofing work itself — every mounting point has to be detached, the panels stored safely, the roof work completed, and the array reinstalled and reflashed at each point once the new roof is ready. None of that is impossible, but it's added cost and added time that sequencing the two projects in the right order avoids entirely.
Flashing details that matter
The mounting hardware itself is largely standardized across roof types, but the flashing detail underneath it has to match whatever covering the roof actually has, and that's where installs differ the most in practice. Asphalt shingles get a flashed mounting foot integrated with the shingle courses the way any other penetration flashing would be, woven in rather than surface-mounted on top of finished shingles.
Slate and tile roofs raise the stakes on getting that match right. Copper is the flashing metal traditionally matched to slate, because it can approach slate's own long service life and moves with the material through thermal cycling the way a mismatched metal wouldn't — and copper flashing typically fails at its solder joints rather than through the sheet itself, which means a mount flashed in copper on a slate roof has a different, more specific failure point to watch than a mount on an asphalt roof does. Using the wrong flashing metal or method on a slate or tile roof doesn't just risk a leak at the mount; it can also mean removing and resetting slate or tile around each point when the array eventually comes off, which is a more involved job than lifting shingles back into place.

Can you remove ice dams yourself?
We'd be cautious about it, and a roof with a solar array on it raises the stakes further. Ice removal on any roof carries a real fall risk, and mechanical methods can damage roofing if done too aggressively. Add an array to that roof and there's now hardware, wiring, and mounting points to avoid as well — a misplaced tool or a slip near a mounting foot can damage a flashing detail that then leaks long after the ice itself is gone. A roof with solar on it is generally a job to have a professional handle rather than attempt from a ladder.
Is there a rebate for insulation in CT?
Programs like that come and go and change in scope, so we're not the right source to confirm what currently applies — an insulation contractor or the state's current energy program listings would have the up-to-date answer. What we can say from the roofing side is that attic insulation and ventilation affect roof performance and ice dam formation regardless of what rebate programs exist at a given time, so it's worth coordinating timing if insulation work and roof or solar work are being planned around the same house.
What are the four types of insulation?
The four commonly used categories are batt or blanket insulation (pre-cut fiberglass or mineral wool panels), loose-fill or blown-in insulation (cellulose or fiberglass blown into place), spray foam (liquid-applied foam that expands and seals as it cures), and rigid foam board (solid panels typically used on structural surfaces rather than open cavities). Which one fits a given project is worth discussing with an insulation contractor rather than assuming one type works everywhere.
How much is guttering to install?
Roofline length is one factor, but material, profile, and how many corners and downspouts the house needs usually move the total more than length alone. A roof with several valleys concentrates water into fewer downspouts than a simple rectangular roofline of similar size, which changes what the system needs to handle. Gutters sit outside our scope as roofers, so a dedicated gutter quote is the right next step, though we'll flag a drainage issue if one turns up during a roof or solar-related visit.
